El gerundio se utiliza en español para expresar acciones que están o estaban en curso.
The continous form is used in Spanish for actions that are taking place now, in the past or in the future.
Se forma con el verbo auxiliar estar + el gerundio.
You form it using the auxilary verb estar and the gerund.
El gerundio de los verbos terminados en -ar se forma con -ando.
The gerund of the verbs ending in -ar, is -ando.
caminar ---------- está caminando
El gerundio de los verbos terminados en -er e -ir se forma en -iendo.
The gerund of the verbs ending in -er and -ir is -iendo.
comer ----------- está comiendo
En la conjugación el gerundio es invariable para todas las personas del verbo. Es sólo el verbo auxiliar el que se conjuga:

cree = creyendo
(cuando la vocal i se encuentra entre dos vocales se convierte en y)
whenever a "i" is between two vowels it changes to "y".
dormir = durmiendo
sentir =sintiendo
pedir = pidiendo
(los verbos que cambian vocal en presente también lo hacen en gerundio)
